THE SCARY TRUTH ABOUT GUM DISEASE AND GINGIVITIS

A PICTURE PERFECT SMILE

Sure, everyone wants their smile to be bright white, but how about healthy pink? The truth is, your (pink) gums are an important part of the picture. Especially when you smile from ear-to-ear.

That’s why you’ll want to avoid “gingivitis”- that scary word really just means inflammation of the gums. It’s directly caused by plaque that’s missed by your regular cleaning routine. At this stage, fortunately, the condition is reversible. Left untreated, however, gingivitis can become periodontitis, a serious oral health disease that can result in tooth loss.

GIVING NOTICE TO GINGIVITIS

Have you looked closely at your gums recently? Because, like many people, you may already have gingivitis and not even know it. Now that’s scary.

Signs and symptoms of gingivitis include:

  • Red, swollen, and tender gums.
  • Bleeding when you brush or floss.
  • Receding gums, giving your teeth an elongated appearance.
  • Pockets forming between teeth and gums, allowing plaque and food debris to collect.
  • Recurring bad breath, or a bad taste in your mouth.

Gum disease can happen to anyone, and it usually becomes even more common as you age. Things that get in the way of cleaning, such as braces, dentures and tooth spacing, tend to increase the likelihood.

SAY CHEESE!

And now, the good news! You can help prevent gingivitis and get your smile camera ready by:

say cheese
  • Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily to remove plaque.
  • Attending regular checkups with your dentist.
  • Eating a well-balanced diet to maintain strong teeth and bones.
  • Avoiding cigarettes and other forms of tobacco.
  • Using a rinse, such as any LISTERINE® Antiseptic product, in your daily routine.
